It's starting to be almost warm enough again to go to a playground after I pick up Sarah at daycare, and it's still light well past five. Today she wanted to visit her friendly neighborhood church park and swing on the swings, and it seemed like the thing to do, so we did. I try to show her how to pump, so she can swing by herself. Yeah, I'm lazy. It's what moves the species forward. Anyway, she doesn't get it yet, so I do a lot of pushing. She likes it best when I push from the top, meaning I stand beside the swing and grab one chain and use it to send her pretty high.
Last year, I was happy to witness a little boy who had just gotten it. He was on the swings near us, excitedly pumping away and soaring heavenward, fore and aft. His excitement was contagious. I was almost as pleased as if Sarah had gotten it.
Just then, his mother came striding up and pulled him off. "...told you to come and eat!" "But MOM!..." He was, it almost seemed, dragged by one ear, still protesting. I wanted to intervene. "But Lady! He just GOT IT! Don't you understand?"
