bye bye...
Feb. 3rd, 2006 07:59 am.
On this day, February 3, 1959, the small plane, "Miss American Pie," crashed during flight and ended at least two biopics. It didn't end the career of Buddy Holly or Ritchie Valens, as far as I can tell. "The Big Bopper" may or may not have had another hit in him. He seems to have kept the toy telephone in his hands and tried to find a sequel to the novelty song (rap?) "Chantilly Lace." Let me just say, I love that song. It's perfect, in its way.
Buddy Holly went on to become a patron saint of rock and roll, or perhaps a demigod. His hitmaking ability, had he lived, would have likely continued. The end of "The Buddy Holly Story" gives the impression he was about to do more great things, of course, but I'm inclined to believe it. And jeez, whatever happened with Gary Busey, anyway? I thought he was going to do more great things too. And Stacey Keach -- I remember seeing him as the Chorus in Antigone and thinking he was really good. Would a couple of well-timed plane crashes have helped the reputations of those two? I'm not snarking, just wondering.
Anyway, the music didn't die. False alarm. But we lost some good musicians41 47 years ago.
