Sarah plays cards now. She received a Thomas the Tank Engine card game for her birthday, and we taught her how to play, and by gum, she plays pretty well. She keeps track of the cards, she knows what she needs to win, and she even has some strategy. She's been pretty good about it when things don't go her way, although last night she simply melted down and threw a tantrum because she came in last in a three-way game. I put her in time out and she howled at me the whole time, then came back and continued ranting. She's usually better about it, I tell ya! We played today and she was as calm as ever. She still tries to hold cards back when I get The Switchman (which lets you switch a card with one of someone else's), but she accepts her fate when it strikes.

Dad reported back on Cousin Marilyn's memorial service. There were hundreds of people there! 350 at the reception afterwards, according to my cousin Andy. Dad and Aunt Linda played piano and violin, but it wasn't really possible to hear them, from what I'm told. Mom wasn't there -- she was being looked after while Dad went out. She's been slow and a little weak lately, Dad says.

On Friday, I decided to go on and start making calls. I was talking to my sister in Colorado, and she mentioned friends who make acceptable money playing at rest homes. Well, heck. I played at rest homes for about eight years as a volunteer, so the only thing different is asking for money. I called one place, and the activity director was out (I left a message). I called another and the activity person said most of her budget was already committed. I said I could come play one time for free, so they could get an idea of what I do, and she said they always take free. She asked if I could send her a brochure, so I spent the rest of the day working one up. I called family members for advice, getting some super tips from my sister in Michigan (a professional folkie), and I am quite proud of the flyer I put together. I'll put a version of it on my web page today or tomorrow.

There's other stuff, but it's time for me to give Sarah a bath. She's yelling at me now from the living room "TIME FOR A BATH!!"
