Mary had a miss it
Apr. 30th, 2006 04:52 pm.
There was a free recital at a church today. They were playing "Ballantine parodies," which to me meant they were probably playing Edward Ballantine's variations on "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in the style of a number of composers. I have an LP of the composer playing these, and they're kind of amusing, and I was hoping to go. Couldn't.
I hauled out the mower around the time they were maybe half over, rearranged the shed to get at it. Then I pulled the cord, and it started right up the first time. I guess that's a good thing. Did the front yard in five minutes, and the back in ten or fifteen. The turf is better out back, except for some mossy tundra that can get dislodged permanently with a wrong step, and some long, sparse shoots of grass coming up in some inhospitable looking dry soil. I'll save it for a combover some day.
Cathy's still sick, and I'm still being 2/3 of the parents. Sarah and I took in some discount stores this morning, and perhaps vice versa. Bought a nice big clock for her room, so she can continue learning to tell time the old-fashioned way. Gotta go. Bathtime. Hers, not mine.

bedtime lines
Apr. 30th, 2006 09:43 pm.
"Sarah, take these dead flowers off your bed. They don't belong there." Referring to some wild flowers (aka weeds) she picked out of the yard just before I mowed it.
"They're not dead. They're alive."
"They were alive when you picked them, and now they're dead."
"Well, they're not dead to me!"
* * *
"I have tattoos on my toes. You can't see them because they're under the skin, but I can feel them."
postscript: My sister sent me a scan of my uncle's obituary from 1942, which she found in Mom's stuff while helping Mom & Dad clean house. I didn't know his middle name was Kipling, or if I knew I didn't remember. So I was named after both my Grandpa Kip, who died around 1953 ("Kip" was his nickname, short for Kipling), and my Uncle Dick. My name isn't short for anything, but those were the inspiration for it.
