quiet night
Oct. 31st, 2006 11:56 pm.
Sarah was looking forward to Halloween. After watching a TV show, she was rarin' to go. I was having some raisin toast to fortify myself for walking around in the warm, pleasant night. She was pestering me to go sooner, but I finished my toast, got a bottle of water, some cough drops, the camera, and a flashlight, and out we went.
We got to the house next door. Sarah didn't want to go on the porch. Too dark? Our neighbor turned on the porch light, but Sarah still wouldn't go. I went up and got her a couple of candies and asked Sarah what she said and she said Thank You and we walked on. I kept the flashlight lit, as streetlights are few and far between on this street (as opposed to the well-lit cul-de-sac we were on in Virginia).
Two houses on, Brett & Raisa's house was dark, so we didn't go there. The next house was brightly lit, and she didn't want to go there. Then she said she was tired and we turned toward home. We saw the family of one of her friends across the street, but she didn't want to join them. We went in and ate supper, rising now and then to give candy to other kids.
The cell phone, which I had put in my pocket, rang with the "text message" ring. Area code 992 wanted to say something or nothing. I didn't see a message attached to it. I deleted it, like I do other messages from weird area codes. I got curious and looked it up: Tadjikistan. Nope, can't think of anybody I know over there.
Happy Halloween, everybody.
