I picked up a DVD of the Disney Babes in Toyland a week or so back. We loved this one as kids. Thinking back on it, I wasn't far from Sarah's age when it came out. Though I've had it on VHS for many years, I hadn't watched it in some time. I'd looked at the vocal score of the operetta at the CNU library, and wondered if the show would be worth putting on stage. The songs looked like they might be entertaining, but I don't recall seeing any of the between-songs script in the book.

Anyway, I left the disk around, and Sarah got curious about it. I didn't show it to her right away, fearing perhaps that she'd be bored with it, but I watched the start of it on my own time. Lots of dancing. She loves dancing. So, maybe she would like it. I casually watched part of it when she was around, and she wanted to see more, so finally we watched it together.

Right off, I recognized a song I'd looked at in the vocal score. "He Won't Be Happy Till He Gets It," only it seems the words were rewritten for the Disney version. As Barnaby (Ray Bolger) and Gonzorgo and Roderigo (Henry Calvin and Gene Sheldon -- aka Sgt Garcia and Bernardo from Disney's "Zorro" series) sang about their criminal plans (to that tune), Sarah asked to skip the scene. I decided, though, not to skip anything, and we watched the whole movie. "Why is she dancing with him if she doesn't like him?" she asked during the "Castle In Spain" number, where Barnaby tries to put the moves on Mary (Annette Funicello, but credited as just "Annette") and I explained that it's because it was a movie.

Partway through, supper was ready, and we ate. Once that was done, she was eager to return to the movie, and we watched it to the end. She told Cathy it was awesome, and watched it again today with her.

I was paternally pleased that she sat and watched it all. The dance numbers were very visual, and I expect she'll pick up some new steps from them. During the love songs between Tom (Tommy Sands) and Mary, while he sings about how they'll be married soon, I kept finding myself mentally finishing verses with the line, "And he won't be happy till he gets it!"
