oh, michigan

.
My nieces [livejournal.com profile] pknight and [livejournal.com profile] khalla_almani graduated from NMU up in Marquette last week. All sorts of relatives were in Michigan to cheer them on, so [livejournal.com profile] malibrarian and Sarah and I got up at 4 last Friday morning and drove to the airport near Hartford. We obediently removed our dignity for scrutiny on the way in. The checkers were particularly interested in my back pack (they didn't know how much stuff I took out of it for the trip), and kept poking at every compartment in it, even as the airline was paging me with "one minute" warnings.

Nonetheless, we made our flight and reached Milwaukee at 9:35 -- I'm still not sure what time zone the 9:35 was. While [livejournal.com profile] malibrarian got the rental car, Sarah and I went to get our baggage. Before I could ask which was our conveyer belt, we saw our black suitcase. Then we saw the red one and Sarah's car seat. They were practically the only things on the belt. I don't know what was up with that, but it was fine with me. I made a move toward the rent-a-carts, but was headed off by George the cart wheeler (I don't remember if he wore a red cap or not), who also knew the quickest way to the rental car desk. We were out of there pretty quickly.

We met up with my sister [livejournal.com profile] gixhaix, who had flown in the night before, and Sarah and I went with her up to Escanaba while [livejournal.com profile] malibrarian, who was still a bit sick with a cold, drove by herself (an activity she found somewhat restful). It was a four-hour drive, but with breaks, it came out closer to six. After checking in at our motel, we headed for Dad's house in Escanaba, where a number of relatives were in attendance. My sister Martha (who reads LJ but doesn't post) had driven in from Colorado to be with her daughter [livejournal.com profile] pknight, along with her other daughter [livejournal.com profile] lady_liberty13 and my brother-in-law Drew. Our oldest sister Kathryn her husband Steve and their son Brian were also there to observe the marching style of their daughter/sister [choose one] [livejournal.com profile] khalla_almani. To be sure the house didn't feel empty, Dad's sister Linda was there along with friend John, and then there was Mom, in better spirits than I've seen her in a while.

Crasher

There are four LJ users in this photo. Can you spot the ringer? Photo by Sarah Williams.

Sarah was in Cousin Heaven and went into Slacker mode right away, prevailing upon these kind souls to carry her around when she wasn't jumping up and down on them. Brian, in particular, seems to be made of remarkably sturdy stuff. Must be the Morski blood in him.

Cousin fatigue

Saturday was Graduation Day, and we slacked a bit ourselves. Sarah and I headed for the pool at our lodging with much anticipation. On finding that the water was about 60 F, we dived back out and returned to our room, venturing on up to Marquette to join our group at the Thai restaurant where the victory feast was held. We beat the crowd. After a plate of Pad Thai so big I couldn't finish it (maybe the second time that's ever happened), I accepted a ride from some Morski relatives over to the apartment of the two graduates, which was in the process of being emptied and cleaned.

I pitched in, moving some large items out of everyone else's work path. [livejournal.com profile] malibrarianwashed dishes. Sarah was in constant motion, carrying objects out to the car, warning everybody to get out of her way, and asking for doors to be opened.

Human dynamo

And so it went. We had dinner at a place in Rapid River, we went to Kathryn & Steve's cabin in the woods (and even played a little bit of music), and made more trips to Dad's. Food was et. Talk was talked. Dad and Sarah and I took a walk among the gnats, but only Dad has learned the way of tranquility inside a cloud of the things, so we didn't stay out a long time. Eventually, final goodbyes and waves marked our departure, and we returned to the road back to Milwaukee in our rented Vibe.

Black hole sun

It was foggy. Maybe that's why the flight going back to Philadelphia (our connection) was being announced as delayed. Somehow, it ended up not being as late as they thought, and we made our connection back to Hartford and drove home with Sarah, who never tires of inquiring when we'll be there. ("In an hour." "Is it an hour yet?")

And the next morning, Thursday, the red suitcase caught up with us as well.
