Or, why I still use an MP3 player, ripping stuff off my CDs and from YouTube, and have never signed up for or bought any of these i-whatevers.

Whales have been living captive in tiny pools for many decades. My question is the same one I have about many other recent campaigns, which is, why only the big fuss about it now?

I'm pretty sure my iPod is an MP3 player. It plays MP3s. It's more reliable than the RCA jukebox it replaced, and three times the capacity.

for "an MP3 player" read "a regular old MP3 player", not one that uses iTunes, which you're not the only person to swear at rather than by. I'm also told that iPods make it difficult to load anything on the player that doesn't come from iTunes.

Yeah, RCA players are crap. I had one once. But others are better, and they come in very large capacities.

Do you mean the iTunes Store? I try to avoid that, though I have about two albums worth of material from there, due to Sarah giving me some at holiday time. The rest of the 20,856 "songs" (ranging from under a minute to over an hour) are things I put in from my own rips (iTunes rips CDs nicely enough, and I also use SoundForge or Audacity to edit as needed), yoinked from YouTube, or downloaded from eMusic (slow and steady, member since 2007).

I should look into other players, though. I don't doubt that I'm paying some kind of premium just to have a little logo of an apple on the back of the machine.
