winstones

.
Most of us have seen the famous Flintstones ad for Winston cigarettes that's available on a number of collections. Until today, despite having seen the series first-run, it hadn't occurred to me that it wasn't the only one.

YouTube also has the complete opening of the show from when Winston was the sponsor, and similarly the uncut closing credits. There's even an ad for Alka-Seltzer.

As always, we stand on the shoulders of giants: thanks to Mark Evanier's news from me for bringing this to my attention. Mark's blog reads good, like the (clap clap) internet should!

Timely, considering what Turner Broadcasting is doing to Hanna-Barbera toons at the UK's behest.

Not that I approve of smoking, but I also disapprove of censorship -- and believe in the difference between cartoons and Real Life (which is something my kids got an earful of, starting at about 1 day old each).

Indeed, yes. It may be what prompted Evanier to run the YouTube link to the first of the ads (he will probably run the other tomorrow). It was the item he posted just before that entry.

They did indeed. Mel "Barney Rubble" Blanc seems to have died of emphysema, but I don't think he was a smoker. (When he did Bugs Bunny, he actually hated carrots. Since nothing else sounded like a carrot, he used to take his bite of carrot and then get rid of it in a trash can in the studio. Perhaps as Barney, he took a drag, then quickly turned and exhaled...)

Sometime in 2046, some geek will be looking back, aghast that Bart Simpson was shilling for Butterfingers candy bars.

And we read it here first! A chillingly plausible prediction, actually.
