Okay, back to my pals at WFMU for another excursion into all that's good and swell about music. This time they have obliged my continuing quest for thrills, old or new, with a bunch of songs that can be described as product music, that is, written and performed for the sake of an advertiser. C'mon, who wants to do "The Frito Twist" with me? Or voyage to the Prelinger Archives and watch a whole Chrysler product musical from the 1950s? Woo hoo!
Following their link to Wikipedia's article on product music also got me this, which might have some amusement value for filkers, and anybody who likes or dislikes IBM. It's the IBM Songbook from 1931. To my disappointment, it's just a bunch of lyrics "to the tune of" other songs, but it's still kind of neat.
For some reason, YouTube wouldn't let me watch the video of The Cardiacs (with a neck-damaging change of topic there), but they seemed sort of interesting too, and I might try again later.

I. B. M. TABULATING MACHINES
Tune: "Till We Meet Again"
Punch a card for every sale that's made.
There's a record which will never fade.
Sort them out by man and state!
Speedily we tabulate.
All such tasks we accurately do--
Payrolls, costs, and inventories true.
Thousands use and praise them too
I. B. M. machines.
