Sean Connery in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring?
Sean Connery turned down the role of Gandalf. He said in an interview that he "didn't understand it" and therefore didn't want to spend 18 months on the project.

More craziness at Not Starring, the place that tells you who they considered before hiring the actors/directors/whatever that were actually in the movies. Thanks to WFMU's Beware of the Blog, I think.

Evidently, after realizing what a mistake he made in turning down the role, he then snatched up the "Next Big Thing" that came his way in the form of League of Extraordinary Gentlemenm. Thereby proving that he really needs a better agent.
