Well, Jesus Bird Christ, as my Texas cousin used to say.
I had a call from my niece today that my sister's surgery went well, and she's doing fine. Good to know. It's not the first major surgery she's had. When she was 16, she came down with ulcerative colitis, and when we drove from Colorado to Texas, we learned every rest stop along the way.
Once, we were in the Texas hill country near Fredericksburg, and there was urgent need. Just when things were looking grim, we found what we needed in Lady Bird Johnson State Park, and ever since that day, my sister (and the rest of us) have had a soft spot in our hearts for the former First Lady. I think she also may have owned a radio or TV station we used to listen to and/or watch, but the details are fuzzy (and I may be confusing them with KTCL in my home town, which was owned by Alf Landon or his family).
Anyway, rest in peace, Mrs. Johnson. There'll be bluebonnets on your grave.

Date: 2007-07-12 04:27 pm (UTC)Lady Bird was still living on the ranch when I visited the national park there ten years ago. Didn't see her, though.
The LBJs did own radio and/or tv stations in Austin and (perhaps, IIRC) elsewhere. Much head-scratching by Robert Caro as to where they got the money to acquire them.
