After years of griping, I got a new camera with the proceeds of some of the jobs I've been doing lately. It's a Canon PowerShot A720, which means it's small and light, takes bigger pictures (up to 8MB), and has more zoom (6x optical). It's also easy to find the features. I think I know as much about it after two days as I do about my other camera after four years.

slide, Sarah, slide!

At full zoom, it froze Sarah in space. The stabilization seems pretty good. This is from yesterday's Harvest Festival in Wilbraham.

Emily rides

Also at the festival, Sarah rode a horse for the first time. Of course, I was somewhere else, taking the wagon back to the car. With the camera in my pocket. This shot of Sarah's friend Emily taking her first ride gives an idea of what I might have missed.

charge

Today, Sarah's soccer team won its fourth (and last) game of the season. Here's an action shot that also shows her face pretty well.

the invisible hand

Lastly, I played with the low-light setting on the way home from the festival last night, and captured this composition in downtown Springfield, MA. I call it "The Invisible Hand," despite the obvious flaw in the title.

There was a Panasonic that looked good, but this one was 8MP instead of 7, and had a viewfinder. Also, it uses AAs instead of fancy expensive batteries. After next paycheck, I might look into rechargeables.

I checked to be sure it used SD cards. Then I found out that what I had already wasn't SD, so now I have a 16MB card until the next time some money comes in. Well, if nothing else, I'm learning to be frugal with my shots. Luckily, it's easier to review pictures on this than on the Olympus.

Cool pictures! I have a Cybershot, which works well for me. And thanks for posting about the camera because I have something I need to take a picture of.

It's a welcome update, since the chances of having Sarah stay still are practically nil.

That frozen action on the slide pic is just terrific. The others are good, too.

Great pics! I'm also happy to see samples of how the camera does, because I need to get a new one. I've got the venerable A80, and while it has done a bang-up job for me, it's got a loose wire or something, so that at times it won't turn on and take pictures, and other times you get this weird pink-washed version of whatever you shoot....

I've been trying different settings. Yesterday it was 3MB. Today it was mostly 5MB with the jpegs being more compressed. When I get a chip with one, two, or four GB on it, I will probably take more pictures at the larger size with the least compression, but it's good to know how to economize, too.

Like I say, I'm finding it easy to explore the settings on this. I wanted to buy it from the young woman who helped me at Circuit City on Thursday, because she was the first really helpful sales person I'd met there, but the guys who helped me on Saturday were okay.
